What you didn't know about Art Schools

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
I have been receiving a lot of emails from prospective art students looking into going to an art school and decided to do a post to guide those who are planning on attending an art school or just any private college.

As all of you know college is very expensive. I am very fortunate enough to have a very generous grandmother who is paying for my college tuition. However for some, they need to get student loans and a little help from the government to pay for their tuition. I'm sure college tuition varies by school but the average cost of a private school is at least $20,000 a year not including living expenses such as dorm, apartment fee, etc. If you include that, it exceeds way more than $30,000 a year. You multiply that by 4 is $120,000, a price of a house in some states, and a down payment for a house in California.

I currently go to the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and before this school I went to a different art school in So Cal and a community college for about years. Honestly, for the past year, I feel like my $30,000 tuition was not well spent. I, and most of the students of my school think the school is just ridiculously expensive. I mean, RIDICULOUSLY expensive. You do not understand how much this school rips you off. They charge you a $170 registration fee that goes up every semester and you have to pay this every single semester to sign up for classes. After charging about $670 per unit(which is going to go up next semester!!!) that equals $8,000 per semester for 4 classes, they charge you a course fee on top of that which varies by class. For an example, I have a computer class that I need to take for my major and they charge students an additional $400 for that class because we need to use the printer which is freaking ridiculous. This school seriously finds every way to rip students off. Last semester they raised the tuition and they are raising the tuition again next semester during this recession. The school knows that during recession people lose jobs therefore, go back to schools. They are taking this opportunity to rip people off and it's just so frustrating because there aren’t much you, as an individual can do. A lot of people who go to my school, and other private schools end up dropping out after their first semester when they realize it is just a waste of money because you really don't learn anything during your first semester. I heard the school does this on purpose to just have people enroll and take their money. For those who stick around, you still don't learn much... Honestly, I feel like I learned way more at the community college than this school. Also I worked as a kitchen and bathroom designer for 2 1/2 years before going to this school and sometimes it's ridiculous how I know more about interior design and the construction law than some of my professors. The AAU is poor at choosing its teachers, which is why students end up having different teachers at the end of the semester (a lot of teachers get fired due to their lack of knowledge in this industry) Out of my 1 + year in this school, for the FIRST time (besides one of my teacher from my last semester) I am finally learning something this semester but I still don't think it is worth the $30,000 I pay. Honestly if I did not need a degree for my profession I would totally quit school and just start from the bottom and work my way up in the industry. However, unless I land a gig in Top Design and win the whole competition, or the law of building construction, etc changes, it is best for me to get a college degree. I’m sure a private art school does give you a more in-depth experience that is related to your major than just a public college since a lot of people transfer from public schools. However when thinking about going to a private school make sure you go to a community college or a public school and get the electives or general courses out of the way. You do not have to pay $2000 for an English class or a Math class at an art school when you can pay almost nothing at a public school. Take as many classes you can then transfer to a private school but know that the cheap Academy of Art only accepts 30 units from other colleges so you still have to pay a crap load of money ($90,000 to be exact) in order to get your degree. Also if you have any questions about the school, don’t ask your counselor or advisor because these people are commissioned based. They will tell you what you want to hear so that you will go to the school. Just look online and ask questions at college forums or ask people who go to the school.
I’m sorry if I am scaring you and if this is all disappointing but I would hate for you to waste your parent’s hard earned money, or soon to be your hard earned money when you can save. If you really want to attend a private school, my best advice to is go to a community college for a year or two and get all the electives/ general courses out of the way. The school, (well my school at least) does not care about you or your education. You just need to be a self starter and have to be willing to learn.
I’m so sorry for this super long post and by no mean am I trying to offend anyone(maybe just the people who own private schools.) I really want everyone to know the truth about art schools (did I mention the owner of my school owns at least 50 vintage cars that are worth millions and millions of dollars? Wonder where our tuition goes to? More cars!) and you really are hardly going to get your money’s worth but because this society demands degrees(remember Kanye West’s College Dropout Album? Lol) and we have no choice but to go along with it.
btw, don't even think about staying at an AAU Dorm.
My first semester I stayed at a shared studio with nasty office carpet on the floor, no AC nor heater, paid around $1,100 a month when I could have gotten a studio on my own for about that price. I told you, this school finds every single way to take your money. I bet they hire people to research on what the best, sneakiest way to steal student's money.

Great post. It sucks how credentialism sets people back, sucks away the opportunity cost of advancing on one's own, and puts people into debt (for those less fortunate). The education system is messed up.

Hahah awww, I'm sorry this sucks! I'm kinda glad I went to Cal Poly State Univ. in SLO. Tuition is about $1,500 a quarter... but law school will be a diff story and I bet it will be private school. I hope they don't rip me off like this school. CRRRAPP.

I totally and completely agree! I went to FIDM in LA and San Francisco - as much as I'm in love with SF... fashion school rips you off as well. FIDM is full of wealthy daddy's girls who have the money to spend and people with less income are swindled to think they will get an amazing job after graduation - but it comes with a hefty price tag. Loooove your blog and you have amazing, amazing style.

WOAH the American Uni fees and courses seem so scary. We're lucky here in NZ because we get student loans from the govt that you don't have to pay back UNTIL after you graduate (of course you can whilst you study) but many people elect not to AND the courses aren't AS expensive. I think if they were as much as your uni I wouldn't even attend :(

Looking beautiful as always.

All the best for thi new semester eh? :)

Nice post ! I didn't know that your college was so expensive..In France most of the best schools are public but you really have to be talented to get in ! Anyway I love the first picture of you, the purple top is sweet and looks so soft !

OMG, your school is so freakin expensive Aimee! you are totally right about going to a public school before entering private schools. def less expensive. help them save more money before paying for vintage cars. lol

OMGosh! That is CRAZILY expensive! I do have a huge University debt (3 University degrees, silly me), but thankfully the Govt pays for it first, and we pay them back when we join the workforce, as Eeli wrote above.

Looking tres cute here ;)

college tuition sucks. i pay almost $30000/year to go school too - it's public school though. which is even worse... lol. (because i haven't worked to support myself, i'm not considered a resident even if i've lived here for 3+ years).

you know what,
I am totally in love with fashion. But then again I chose not to go to fashion colleges. I live in Indonesia, and one possible option is to go to fashion colleges in Singapore.
But, for someone who is already learned sewing for about 2 years like me, my teacher said that it's a waste of money. And to study there needs loads and loads of money.... They rip people off. And to earn money is hard. Those things you learn there are not worth the money.
My teacher said, if you must go to a fashion college, then go to ones in Japan or Europe. But since it's pretty impossible for me to do that (I don't think I'm able to ask my parents to pay such big amount for me), so for now I think I'll choose English Literature for my major in the future.

And I cannot agree more, experience is the best teacher. And thus, my dream is to work in a big fashion house.....

It was really sad to read this post. Instead of encouraging people to go to school, they create all kinds of challenges and impossible to pay tuition fees. I'm really glad colleges and Universities in Canada are not as corrupt and in most cases you can get a government loan to pay for your schooling until you are done school. Then you obviously have to start paying back with a LOT of interest. Oh well...
Thanks for the compliments darling! Me and my sis are planning on doing a shoot, hopefully soon. :)
Muahhhh!
Oh, btw I love your top! It's so gorgeous and the gold bracelet just goes wonderfully with it!

I thought it was just my school that was expensive as hell and doesn't teach anything. Seriously, I don't feel like I've learned anything for the past 2 years of my course. We don't even have proper studiospace. Then they make us do compulsory foundation course for MORE money rippage. Worst thing is that artschool is trendy now, so everyone who can draw and colour a little (which is, excuse me, 90% of girls?) will want to go to artschool - thinking it's an easy way out. I just hope my tuition fee is worth the school name on the certificate, which is just depressing. Great post, you do realise 70% of your 'readers' didn't read it though, right? :P so is life. About your outfit though, you pull off headbands best out of all out there. wuv you bff :P

I go to AAU now to get my masters in fashion merchandising online, and I can tell you that the fees here are bad, but they were bad my regular college too. As a matter of fact my old school let people in just to take their money and they raised tuition as well. I think this is something all school do now. It isn't right, but it happens.

I love what you're wearing..the top is so cute, and you look amazing!!
and about college tuition..I totally agree!! my university does the exact same thing (I don't go to art school). not only is it VERY expensive (about $35,000), but we also get to pay for fees for things that we don't even need/use.

rachel said...

that sucks about school and tuition.. especially if you don't get your money's worth. I experienced that last year in Lasalle College in Montreal too. They claim to be such a good "fashion" school, and I'm not buying it. They changed the program I registered for at the last minute making it totally unrelated to fashion and their system sucks. They are really the worst.

I was really happy with FIT though. I only took non credit courses and I got more out of that than in Lasalle, plus they (FIT) hook you up with people in the industry.

anyway, you look amazing babe. :) I adore your hair here

Frankly, I'm not really sure what all the Twitter hype is either. Curiosity is probably the main reason I'm on it.

This post definately reassured me that going to school in the US is even more unrealistic. Sucks that you had to go through all that and that people are so greedy and go out of their way to scam students for money.

Im sorry to hear that about your school...as and art student too I've been interested of going to study abroad but maybe I'll just apply to the art universitys here in Finland after i've finished my current school... Education here costs you pretty mutch just the price of your books (they're free too until high school) even the food is free...it's just really hard to get in...

I totally agree. A school is a school is a school is a school. I've been schooled privately and publicly. The private schools that I've been to, were more about pom and rituals and appearance, lacking substance. (However there are some private schools that do have standards) Especially when it comes to Unis, you make of it what you will. What you learn in the classroom is jack and shit to what you can apply into the real world. Experience is so important and something that a 4 walled classroom can never quite prepare you for.
Great post and I love your style missy.

art school definitely is the biggest rip off you'll ever experience in...well life really hahaha. my situation is a little different though, cause i'm pursuing a business degree (design and management) program at an art school. in my program, about half the core classes are repetitive and straight up useless, so i know what you mean :/

moving on then!!
i like your chiffon-y top. i'm looking for more flowy tops for when spring finally hits stupid new york. meh!

I love your headband. Mmm, I always feel like my college/university is stealing as much of my money as it possibly can. I always feel like the quality of teaching could be much better. A lot of the time I think I'm just narked at being overcharged for really disgusting food but I have no time to make tasty things for myself ever night :( xxx

i completely back what u said about art schools. otis was a waste of time and money for me. i think if you're going to learn a trade - like illustration, animation, graphic design, etc - yes, it's worth going. but man do they rip u off. but in the end, it's all about getting that degree.

oh, u forgot to mention how frickin ridiculously expensive art supplies are, too (or did u and i missed it? haha). and i remember having to spend an extra $200-300 a WEEK on supplies on top of everything else. ugh...so glad those days are behind me.

in my opinion education should cost very little to nothing at all. there are people dying on the street and families getting evicted from their homes every day because they were never able to get a college education, therefore never able to obtain a successful job to support the weight of themselves plus their children. why were they never able to receive a college degree? because college is too damn expensive.

think of all the people that come from underprivileged homes. yes, they do get some money from the government but not nearly enough to fund their entire four years of schooling. their parents don't have good enough credit to cosign on loans for the remaining unpaid tuition because they've been broke their entire lives. and the teen doesn't have credit built up for themselves because they are young and just getting out of high school so they're pretty much screwed! ugh this pisses me off.

school should be free, that's all i'm saying. jesus christ i went to a 27,000 per year interior design school right out of highschool and dropped out after two semesters. i could have taught myself that shit for free! the teachers are so dumb.

Jayci said...

love your blog.
i agree 100% on your blog about art schools. unfortunately, i am not a FIDM grad but completed only 1 year and dropped out due to the fact that they were doing some funky business with the finances and adding on fees to return unused books, giving me only 3 days to pay for my school tuition if i wanted to continue with my spring semester... etc. so i decided to drop out and go to a public university. Art schools only care about money and aren't on top with academics. Think of private schools as big corporations and insurance companies who don't really care but money. anyways, keep up the great blog! love it.

Thanks a bunch for the information! I'm a highschool junior and i started looking for the perfect art school my freshman year. I've yet to find THE perfect school, but it's good to know somebody reinforces the community college before straight to school idea. I thought it might not be worth it, but now i know it is! :)

omg, I totally agree with you about art schools being a rip off. I just graduated from a sister school of Art Institute and it was such a waste of money - but by the time you realize how much of a waste it is, its too late and you're already in tons of debt and then the credits dont transfer anywhere, lol. My school was about $8,000 per quater - I just graduated and have no idea how I'm going to pay this back...and its so sad that public schools dont really have art programs :/

Hi there!
I would like to burn a theme at here. There is such a nicey, called HYIP, or High Yield Investment Program. It reminds of financial piramyde, but in rare cases one may happen to meet a company that really pays up to 2% daily not on invested money, but from real profits.

For quite a long time, I earn money with the help of these programs.
I'm with no money problems now, but there are heights that must be conquered . I make 2G daily, and I started with funny 500 bucks.
Right now, I'm very close at catching at last a guaranteed variant to make a sharp rise . Visit my web site to get additional info.

wow, thank you for this post. for the longest time i was considering going to FIDM or AAU, but was always hesitant because of the high cost. And what was even MORE annoying was that if I requested brochures to be sent to my house, i had to leave my phone number/email address, and then i start getting mad phone calls from random numbers. it'd be the school asking me to set up an appt time with them. it was SO SO annoying; they called like 3 times a day!

aimee, thanks so much for this post. is there anything you could recommend in trying to get a foot in the fashion world?~
